Old Fantasies Never Die – “I’m going to call John Thompson and find out if his wife is dead, said ”Maryann who had just finished seeing the movie, “Elsa and Fred.”

The movie is about an old man who moves into an apartment next door to to an old lady, and about how they fall in love. And about how their not quite perfect “children” who suffer from a sense of entitlement and are well into their 50’s, are outraged.

Maryann is eighty or something like that. She loved the movie. She also loved John Thompson but that was a very long time ago. Maryann and John were high school sweethearts. “He was cute,” she said. “Not one of the jocks or really popular boys, but a cute ‘ nerd.’ He was smart all right…. Smart enough to like me!

“We lived in Boston… actually outside Boston, in a suburb. I used to remind my children how I walked 5 miles to school in the snow all winter… that was what I said whenever they complained about being inconvenienced in their mostly cushy lives.

“I really did walk 5 miles in the snow to school…. At least twice each winter…. mostly because it was fun and because John Thompson walked with me and we held hands.

Okay, so Maryann re-thought her plan. She would not contact John Thompson. She’s a lady and she knows it’s not nice to ask him if his wife was dead. Besides, she confided, she knows in her heart of hearts that John Thompson would contact her if he were available.

How would he know where to find you, I asked. You’re in California and he lives in Boston? That is if he’s still alive and hasn’t moved.

“I’m pretty creative,” she smiled. “My high school has an alumni newsletter and I jumped on the opportunity.”

Opportunity to do what? I asked.

I took an ad in the newsletter. The young people who edit the thing loved it. My ad was a Christmas wish to all my former classmates with a current picture of me. I have to think that would get John Thompson’s attention.”

If he’s alive.

“Stop with the details, honey,” she said. “Haven’t you ever had a fantasy?
