Optimism Intact – I’m a morning person. I wake up every day, okay almost every day, full of hope. I like to think I don’t exactly sit around waiting; I’ve lived long enough to know better. I work hard at my optimism.

Now, just like you, I face a new year and a clean slate: 2011.

Ever hear about the “Instant Coffee Theory of Life?”

Harold KushnerHarold Kushner wrote brilliantly that given a new jar of instant coffee, most people use a heaping teaspoon. He says that it is human nature, however, that as the jar empties, we tend to use less coffee to make the same cup. It has to do with valuing life more as we age.

I find myself holding on to all the good things that happened in 2010, I suppose, as a way to prepare myself or the transition into a new year’s journey.

I don’t like to think about the bad stuff. I prefer the optimism of looking ahead on the shoulders of that which has nourished me and made me happy.

I wonder if you do that too.

I have a new little nephew being born tomorrow or maybe even on Christmas day. He joins the newest generation of our family which includes Aidan, Parker and Annabel, (also born this year).

I’m grateful that my mom is healthy enough to enjoy her great grand-babies as they learn to crawl and walk and talk.

I’m happy for good health, a wonderful family, my sister, Jane, good friends, and work I love.

I’m grateful for the confidence of the clients I’ve served for so many years.

I’m proud that the jeans I wore five years ago still fit and that I count my husband and children among my best friends.

I’m excited that the sight of the ocean and the rainbow I saw from my backyard after the rains this week, still give me chills.

What will this new year bring?

How could I know?

I promise myself to do my best to love, laugh and live every day with gusto. Won’t you join me?

Happy New Year to all!
