The Two Wolves Inside of Us

two wolves happy babytwo wolves - unhappy baby

I’ve had this profound incredible love experience! When my grandson Aidan was born six months ago, I learned about still another kind of ecstasy; I thought I had that part of my life covered until I hugged that child.

Love… romantic or parental … comes with a certain kind of responsibility. Our loved ones need to be better off with us in their lives; we, after all, require the same from each of them. Aidan, on the other hand, doesn’t have to do much!

I want to teach him so many things. Like the Cherokee story about the “two wolves” inside us all. When he is old enough to understand and not be frightened by my story, I will tell him about the “evil wolf” and the “good wolf” and how they battle inside of each of us.

The “evil wolf” is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.

The “good wolf” is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

When the old Cherokee told this story to his grandson, the child asked, “Which wolf wins?”
The old man simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Smart kid. Smart grandpa. I’m saving this lesson for Aidan. For now, dear friends, take these words into your hearts and I’ll try to do the same.
